Join John Cleveland, chef and co-owner of 2022 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant, Post & Beam, for a historical culinary journey. This four-course dinner is inspired by recipes by Malinda Russell, a free Black woman from Tennessee who self-published the first known cookbook by a Black woman, A Domestic Cookbook in 1866. Guests will enjoy wine from Meadows Estate and cocktails from Uncle Nearest, a premium Tennessee whiskey that honors the world’s first known African American master distiller, Nearest Green, an enslaved Black man credited with teaching Jack Daniels the craft of distilling.

About Chef John Cleveland:
A rising star in the culinary world, John Cleveland is the head chef and co-owner of the fine-dining restaurant Post & Beam in Los Angeles. Along with his wife Roni, chef Cleveland took the reins of this popular 11-year-old restaurant in 2019 with the goal of continuing its legacy as one of South L.A.’s most revered, award-winning, Black-owned restaurants. Restaurateurs Brad and Linda Johnson of Post & Beam Hospitality first opened the eatery opened in December 2011 in partnership with award-winning head chef Govind Armstrong.
Showcasing the restaurant group’s ethos of embracing locally sourced ingredients, chef Cleveland continues to highlight local farms to create a Southern-inspired menu with a California sensibility.
Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.
James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.
