Acclaimed Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio takes center stage for this exclusive evening which serves as a delicious introduction to Gastón’s newest La Mar Cocina Peruana location, opening in mid-September in downtown Bellevue, Washington.
For this special evening, chef Acurio will curate a unique menu alongside executive chefs from Lima (the original La Mar), Miami, and San Francisco. Bellevue's own chef Kaoru Chang will take the spotlight as well, showcasing his culinary talent alongside Acurio's renowned expertise. This innovative dinner event connects Bellevue, Washington, and Lima, Peru through gastronomy.
Diners will have the opportunity to explore the rich seafood diversity of the Pacific Ocean, connecting the North Pacific waters with their South Pacific counterparts. This is a rare event which will serve as a platform to introduce both chef Kaoru Chang and La Mar Bellevue to the culinary world, as Acurio continues his lifelong mission of introducing Peruvian cuisine to the global gastronomic stage.

About Gastón Acurio: 
Gastón Acurio is a chef, writer, entrepreneur, and one of the most important promoters of Peruvian cuisine in the world. Chef Acurio has opened Astrid & Gastón franchises in Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Spain. He is also the chef and owner of several other restaurants including La Mar, Tanta, Panchita, Chicha, Madam Tusan, Bachiche and Papacho’s. Astrid & Gaston was listed among the top twenty restaurants in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for three consecutive years both Astrid &Gastón and La Mar have been recognized by Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. Acurio’s restaurants span nine countries worldwide with 12 brands across more than 45 restaurants.
Throughout his career, Acurio has received several awards, among them, he was named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the magazine América Económica. In 2005, he received The Prince Claus of Holland Award and was named an Ambassador of Good Will for UNICEF in 2009. He also won the "World Gastronomy Award in Sweden" in 2013 and was awarded for his work in favor of the promotion of sustainable cooking. In 2014, he was honored by his Alma Mater, Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.
In 2018 Gastón Acurio was recognized with the Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award of The World 50 Best Restaurants for his work putting Peruvian cuisine in the eyes of the world and was recognized with the Eckart Innovation Prize, organized by the BMW Group.
Acurio continues the creation of new brands, most recently, El Bodegon and Barra Chalaca in Lima, and Yakumanka in Barcelona. He travels to promote Peruvian cuisine and is working with the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú to create the first gastronomic university in Peru.

About Kaoru Chang: 
La Mar Bellevue’s executive chef Kaoru Chang is an award-winning, progressive culinary professional with over 19 years of direct experience in establishments that include a James Beard-awarded restaurant and several fine dining concepts including the globally recognized Japanese fine dining concept, Nobu.
Prior to completing his culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu, Kaoru Chang spent a decade traveling the world with his family, living in countries ranging from the Dominican Republic to the United Kingdom. His decision to pursue his lifelong passion of becoming a chef landed him a position at the world-renowned Nobu Restaurant Group in Miami Beach, Florida. During his time at Nobu, chef Chang was part of the opening team of Nobu Mexico and collaborated at Nobu events in countries such as St. Lucia and throughout the United States. With this invaluable experience in fine dining and Japanese techniques obtaining at Nobu, chef Chang then joined the Juvia Miami Beach team as their corporate chef.
His unwavering passion and continued growth in Peruvian and Asian cuisine and techniques drives this third generation Nikkei chef to new and continued heights. In late 2023, Chang joined Acurio International to take the culinary helm at the highly anticipated La Mar Bellevue opening, located just minutes outside of Seattle, Washington.



Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.

James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.

Reservation Policy:

All reservations are non-refundable and must be made in advance. Should the event be cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances, including COVID-19, JBF will offer a range of options, including ticket exchanges, the option to donate tickets, or a full refund.
