25 11th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

January in New York has us dreaming of the sunny skies and picturesque coastlines of Portugal. Take a break from the cold and go on a culinary journey to explore the bounty of Portugal’s preserved seafood and high-quality wines. From the Iberian Peninsula to New York City, tinned fish is all the rage.  And no one knows that better than Anna Hezel, Epicurious editor and author of Tin to Table: Fancy, Snacky Recipes for Tin-thusiasts and A-fish-ionados. Anna, along with Andre Ramos, wine specialist of Portugalia Marketplace, will take you on a guided pairing that incorporates the notable varietals of Portuguese wine paired with exemplary tinned fish. From anchovies to Alvarinho, join us for a leisurely afternoon where we make the argument that a couple of tins of fish and a few glasses of wine might just be the perfect meal.

About Andrew Ramos:

Portugalia Marketplace Wine Specialiast André Ramos was born in Terceira Island in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. Growing up on the island’s village of Biscoitos, André routinely saw residents carrying grapes to harvest festivals. At age 10 his family moved to the Azorean island of Sao Miguel, where they operated what became one of the island’s best restaurants, and where he first started learning about Portuguese wine. After attending the University of Aveiro, he moved to Fall River to work at Portugalia Marketplace, where he has been the Wine Specialist for the past nine years. During that time he has expanded the store’s portfolio to 1,400 Portuguese SKUs – with an emphasis on hard-to-find bottles from Bairrada and Colares (a subregion of Lisboa), created a Portuguese wine club, and partnered with Wines of Portugal on educational material for customers.

About Portugalia Marketplace

Founded by Fernando Benevides, and now run by his son Michael (“the Willy Wonka of Portuguese food and culture”), this 35-year-old Fall River company is the country’s leading purveyor of Portuguese specialty foods and home goods. The 20,000-square foot store features: the United States’s most comprehensive selection of Portuguese wines and spirits (1,400+ SKUs), a café with Portuguese baked goods, a prepared foods counter for sit-down and to-go meals, the country’s largest temperature-controlled salt cod room, and aisles upon aisles of specialty foods such as conservas (tinned fish) olive oils, cured meats, cheese, all of which can be shipped nationwide. Artigos, a department within Portugalia Marketplace, showcases the best in Portuguese design from established brands such as Vista Alegre as well as newcomers like Casa Cubista, and encompasses fine china, handicrafts, soaps, cork objects, apparel and home furnishings.
